Black Ops II – Treyarch Dev Responds to Xbox 360 Favoritism Claims From PS3 Camp

Treyarch Dev Responds to COD Black Ops 2 Xbox 360 Favoritism Claims From PS3 Camp

Updated Info: The post thread has been removed by admins or mods. There is not a cached version of Vonderhaar’s quotes, but here are all the quotes we do know.

The Original Story was created by a unhappy ps3 gamer that created a thread titled ‘BO2 on PS3: Lack of Developer Interaction and Dialogue’. This post was on the Black Ops II forums and it has attracted 208 replies most of which are really just unhappy and some of which are just hating. Many of these gamers are just mad that xbox 360 has always gotten content first and ps3 gamers where using that post to vent about that directly to the company. Many of post that where uncalled for.

Many of the fans where totally uncalled for and we are very shocked that the mods or admins did not remove the topic or posts before.

However, Treyarch’s Game Design Director, David Vonderhaar, decided to weigh in on the discussion, as spotted by reader Mimzymoo.

Here are all the quotes from David Vonderhaar on the thread. He began his rebuttal by stating;

And you seriously wonder why I don’t enjoy talking to you? You’ve been throwing me under a bus this entire thread.

[Complaining] that I tweeted about Xbox Live problems to Xbox Live fans is really a new low-point for you. When the PSN melts down, I’ll be doing the same thing. Oh right, I did do that when the PSN melted down.

It’s fine. I am a big boy and a few of you are not so great at making friends. When you think about changing your ways; I’ll think about communicating with you more often.

In the meantime, I’ll be doing the same thing I did last game, rolling with my own platform-specfic game crews to check the health of the game in the real world. That crew [still] won’t include anyone from the PS3 forum community whose primary post count deals with taking jabs at me.

Later, Vahn responded to forum user thebigb59, who’s concerned by the lack of PS3 developers from Treyarch being active on the forums. Vahn explained;

Very few people are spokespeople and permitted to talk to the community. We have 3 community people who manage the forums on a day to day basis.

Many developers, PS3 [specific] and otherwise, are on the forums. I know because they link me threads all the time. They lurk because they are not really supposed to post in the first place; and they lurk because of the negativity that can surround them when they make themselves known.

If the PS3 lead(s) wanted to post on the forums because he found it useful or enjoyable, we would probably let him after some media training. He doesn’t.

My PS3 crew on Black Ops 1 contained a Canadian, an Englishman, a Scottsman, and 2 Americans. I found them via Twitter. They were people who were having problems with the PS3 that I was trying to work out. One of them also happened to be a forum guy.

I burned through a couple of people to find these 5. I ditched anyone who fanboyed or trolled. I liked working with the guys so much that I invited them to my house. I’ll probably be doing the same thing this year.

I don’t surround myself with people who blow smoke up my ass; and I don’t surround myself with people who hate on me, Treyarch, Treyarch developers, or the game.

If you want developers on the forums and better communication, then clean up and self-police your community better.

Vahn further clarified his stance on the subject of platform favoritism to everyone.

I get it. I’m not blind. I understand. If I didn’t understand, or cared, I wouldn’t have posted in the first place.

Some of you, not all of you, micro everything I have to say as continued evidence that Treyarch (or I) have it out for non-Microsoft platforms. Or, as I’ve seen often, twist my words to represent your agenda or point of view.

Or, you might toss in a few jabs words about something [totally] unrelated such as our panel at Cod XP, or a Tweet I made about problems over a million people were having with Xbox Live and our game(s).

In this building are a lot of hard working people who care about Wii and work on it every day, just as we have many hard working people who fight for the PS3, or are constantly trying to make the PC game a strong PC game.

You wanted to know why you aren’t getting intel. So, I’m telling you.

That’s one reason. It’s certainly the primary reason why I personally don’t spend much time in sub-forums. The other reason is that I am busy working on the game and don’t have much time.

The other reasons include business considerations and PR / [communication] strategies, which no line level developer has anything to do with, can’t comment on, doesn’t know the details, and probably doesn’t care or have time for because he or she is working on trying to make a solid game for the platform(s) that developer represents.

Vahn, then, replied to two specific quotes from user Mizanur who’s worried about the general improvements on the platform, but Mizanur did use some harsh words in expressing his stance.

Mizanur: It’s pretty sad you can’t tell us something specific that is being done to make the game perform better.

We haven’t talked about this on any platform. It’s not part of the communication strategy. We haven’t even revealed MP yet, let alone get into this kind of detail.

Mizanur: Shocking really considering we [paid] for nearly half your wages.

This is exactly the kind of comment I’m talking about. You can’t seem to make a statement or point without getting a jab in. That sort of straight up negativity is why you are [frequently] ignored. It takes one stale statement to ruin an otherwise perfectly reasonable question.

I’m just telling you what you need to be successful if you want me to communicate with you. That isn’t the way.

How do you feel Treyarch has handled the PS3 community in general? Are Vonderhaar’s responses justified?

    Yea that makes no sense what’s so ever. We get it David Vonderhaar you don’t like the fact some the harsh things people post might actually be somewhat true. I also understand that you can’t really discus certain things to the community for various reasons whether you don’t know, can’t say and what not.
    BUT one thing that MUST be told to the community is why you guys, a multiplatform developer team in treyarch and whatever left with Infinity Ward, always must favor 360 with time exclusives and what not. Realistically gamers do hold your jobs in check, we buy your games we play the MP and SP you guys put so much time, blood, sweat, tears, and whatever else to make it a brilliant game but whether it’s your fault or Activision who allows this Console Favoritism it has to end. It’s only annoying the living hell out of gamers and for what reason? Some extra cash? Instead of knowing your game is amazing and people love it and the joy the work you put into it was well worth it? That is far worse than what anything that was said in the forums.

    I’ve been bullied, trolled and whatever else that people do on the internet and in real every day life. If you’re that sensitive over what people say then I suggest you find a different career because whether or not the things that were said is true, this is how the real world works; especially internet.

    You’re going to find people who will trash talk and hate you for things that makes no sense but to attack the community as a whole for a few individuals whether, again, they’re right or wrong is unfair. YOU MUST BE THE BIGGER MAN. You cannot stoop to these guys level. Shrug it off and walk away. Let them feel like they won because it never will end and I can attest to that myself first hand.

    I enjoyed black ops and I personally can’t wait for Black Ops 2 in the improvements and other things it’ll be offering. I just hope this console exclusivity and other random BS with all companies and developers will freaking stop. Gamers are all the same: we want to play games, enjoy the game and have fun. If anyone is slowing killing the joys of gaming it’s MS Business structure in how they operate. Instead of there using money to make brilliant new IPs/Exclusives for there console they have to use the money to pay developers up for exclusive content just for people to buy there version. Now THAT makes no sense. People should be buying 360 and PS3 and Wii for there exclusives and whether they enjoy there console preference is the 360 and the perks or PSN or motion control for Wii I guess not for timed exclusive dlc, exclusive weapons, skins and what not over the competitor. And fanboys of any console should really be quiet because you guys are just as bad if not more so than the companies competing with these tactics. I’m a gamer I play any game for the most part on ANY system and I’ll give it a try before making my final thoughts on the game. I used to think PS3 was better than 360; I used to think Call of Duty was a shit game and it was the same and I joined the hate train. But after playing call of duty i realized it’s just a different shooter style than the BF games or other shooters and that’s when I started to enjoy the style it offers. But not to the point of calling over shooters “they suck this one is better” or what not but for the purpose of enjoying what it does.

    Like to thank anyone who reads this long crazy maybe run on sentenced rant of my own and hope you can understand what I’m trying to say. :)
