Treyarch started building the Black Ops 2 multiplayer component in May last year, roughly six months after getting down to business on the Black Ops 2 campaign. There were thus plenty of fully thought-out gizmos and mechanics to draw on.

“I was reading an article the other day that defined creativity as ‘approaching problems from an unexpected direction’,” Vondehaar began. “That was the approach we took with this project – we wanted to take every piece of the project, whether it was gameplay systems, social systems or technology, and approach it from an unexpected angle.
“We wanted to challenge our own assumptions and push our own boundaries. It’s easy with a game like ours to build on what you’ve established as a foundation.
The multiplayer takes place exclusively in Near-Future Land, and you’ll be able to fly quad-rotor drones, deploy advanced electrical weapons and all that jazz. “Because multiplayer’s a kind of sandbox game what this does is really opens up our design options,” Vondehaar explained. “It really gives us the most advanced technology to create the most interesting gameplay.
“So of course you’ll see drones make an appearance, but they have to have a gameplay appearance, they’re not candy, they have to be part of the battlefield, they have to part of the threat. They have to be something you’re dealing with above eye-level. We have to use this technology in ways to figure out how it would impact optics on weapons, how that technology would be applied there.”
“All the technology in multiplayer has drawn a lot of influence from what the world will be like in 2025 but really on the gameplay side. Gameplay, gameplay, gameplay. That’s all we do. We don’t worry about story in multiplayer. So these gameplay mechanics, we’ve been interested in doing a lot of mechanics that haven’t shown up yet because we haven’t been able to justify them.
“The 2025 time period gives us the ability to make them authentic and that’s how we’re applying the technology. So you’ll see that directly reflected in the gameplay technology as you play.”
