One of the most common mistakes I see in Modern Warfare 3 is bad placement of claymores and other equipment. Hopefully this guide will help you to be more efficient and effective when placing deployable items on the battlefield. This first part covers one of the more efficient ways of placing claymores. Other articles will cover other pieces of equipment as well.
Claymore – The “Inny” vs. the “Outy”
When placing claymores in Modern Warfare 3 (or any other Call of Duty game) it is important to think about the actual blast direction and radius. A common mistake that players make is to put the claymore facing a doorway in an attempt to catch players as they come into a building or room. While this may get you kills occasionally, there will be many times where the enemy will either see the red trip wires for the claymore, or they will run past it before it has a chance to detonate. A much better strategy to use is to actually put the claymore against the wall facing into the room. This way when the enemy runs through the doorway, not only do they not have the warning of seeing the trip wires, but they also end up with the claymore facing their back and spend more time directly in the blast radius. The following videos show a rough idea of how this works. In each video I set claymores and then do a quick run through on where the enemy would be approaching from so that you can see what the enemy would see.
This first video is an example of the bad claymore placement you are likely to see in game. Notice that the claymore usually are facing toward the door, which can make them more visible, but even more importantly can limit their blast radius and trigger zone due to the angle of the walls.

This second video shows examples of how I tend to place my claymores in modern warfare 3. They face in toward the open area and away from the door or wall. This gives them a maximum kill zone as well as a larger trigger zone so enemies are more likely to get caught in them. It also makes them less visible so the approaching enemy is less likely to notice them.

Note that when the claymore is facing the doorway, the enemy has a chance of sprinting through the kill zone before the claymore can go off. The closer to the doorway it is, the less room you have to catch the enemy in the kill zone. Also note that the walls of the room block part of the trigger zone as well as the blast radius. By placing the claymore facing into the room, as the enemy comes through the door, they are not only in a bigger trigger zone, but also spend more time in the blast radius of the claymore. The walls do not block any part of the blast or trigger zone either, this means you have much greater chance of actually getting the enemy before they have a chance to get out of the kill zone. Since the blast is at the enemies back, they are also less likely to try and sprint away as they most likely do not see the claymore and will have much less warning.
Hopefully this will help you make more efficient use of your claymores and put a little more hurt on the enemy team. One thing to be aware of, in hardcore matches, you need to be very careful about spending too much time in your own claymores kill zone. If an enemy comes in and triggers it, you may end up killing yourself as well as any teammates that may be in the room with you. Situational awareness is your best friend.
